Ghana’s educational system was formerly fashioned on the British system. Starting school at the age of six, a child goes through six years of primary school, three years of junior secondary school, which is followed by three years of senior secondary school. Basic education in Ghana is compulsory and free, requiring a child to complete the first nine years of their education. The last three years (senior secondary school) optional. Tertiary education in Ghana is one of the highest quality in Africa, where the University of Ghana ranks 46th out of 300 ranked universities. There are over 10 Universities and Technical Training schools in Ghana that teach a variety of subjects ranging from Music, Language, and the Performing Arts, to Engineering, Legal Studies, Medicine and Politics. Many Ghanaian students have the opportunity to study abroad and do so in the best schools including Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Oxford Cambridge, as well as the Sorbonne. |
